MycoCat Vitality FAQs
Why Give Your Cat Mushrooms?
Mushrooms are a natural source of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and enzymes. When used as a supplement, certain functional mushroom species can help support your cat’s overall wellness by contributing to healthy cellular function and natural immune defenses.
Functional mushrooms have been valued for centuries and are now being used in holistic pet care for their unique nutritional profiles. Compounds like beta-glucans and triterpenes, found in mushroom cell walls, are being studied for their ability to help maintain a balanced immune response and promote general vitality in pets.
Which MycoCat Mushroom Extract Blend is Right For My Cat?
While many functional mushrooms offer overlapping benefits, each blend in the MycoCat line is formulated with a unique combination of mushrooms and adaptogens to support different aspects of feline wellness.

Organic vegetable glycerin not only preserves the tincture but also provides a gentle, palatable base that’s safe for pets. Its antimicrobial properties help keep the product shelf-stable, and it’s naturally free from alcohol, making it ideal for cats.
Can Vitality support joint health for cats?
Vitality features mushrooms like Reishi and Shiitake, which have traditionally been used to support mobility and overall comfort. These ingredients are valued for their role in promoting ease of movement and flexibility, especially in aging cats. While individual results may vary, many pet parents choose these mushrooms as part of a daily routine for long-term wellness.
What is a Spagyric Tincture?
In the realm of mushroom supplements, many brands choose to cultivate their fungi on grain. Why? Well, primarily because it's a more cost-effective approach compared to venturing into the wilderness to harvest these remarkable mushrooms. However, there's a significant downside to this method when it comes to benefiting your furry companions.
You see, when companies rely on myceliated grain, they're essentially excluding the actual mushrooms from the equation. And here's the kicker – the valuable compounds like beta-glucans and terpenoids are predominantly found in those mushroom caps. So, if you're seeking genuine benefits, it's crucial to opt for a product crafted from wild-harvested mushrooms.
Jason Scott, the mycologist behind my mushroom extract tinctures line for pets, MycoDog, recently joined me on the Your Natural Dog podcast to delve into the importance of sourcing when it comes to mushrooms, and to offer insights into what to prioritize in a mushroom supplement for pets.
“When you are looking at research of mycelium and the benefits of mycelium, it doesn’t really translate to myceliated grain the same way that people are kind of insinuating that it does. Whereas when you work with the full fruit body, you know what you’re getting, [everything] you’re getting is coming from the mushrooms themselves.” – Jason Scott on Your Natural Dog Podcast
Now, enter MycoDog, the rebel in the mushroom game. We do things differently. We get our mushrooms straight from the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, not from some grain bag or sawdust pile.
“We try to be as transparent as possible, and until we have a verified method to be producing mycelium in a pure way, we’re not going to offer it, because right now you just can’t get it unadulterated.” – Jason Scott on Your Natural Dog Podcast
Choosing MycoDog means you’re giving your pet only the good stuff, just the full benefits of mushrooms without compromise. So, when it comes to the best mushroom supplement for your pet, we’ve got you covered.
Why A Mushroom Extract Tincture And Not A Pill Or Powder?
Extraction is a vital process that unlocks the beneficial compounds within mushrooms, making them more readily available for use. Liquid mushroom extracts are highly effective at capturing and preserving the bioactive elements released during extraction, offering a concentrated source of natural wellness support.
Typically, the process begins with hot water extraction and alcohol extraction of the mushroom’s fruiting body. This dual method allows for a broad spectrum of beneficial compounds to be collected, including polysaccharides (such as beta-D-glucans), triterpenoids, ergosterol, antioxidants, and Vitamins B and D.
For products intended for pets, glycerin is used as the preservation medium instead of alcohol, offering a gentle and palatable option. Mushroom extracts may also be dried and sold as powders; however, it’s important to note that many powdered products on the market are simply ground-up mushrooms combined with growing medium, which often contain fewer concentrated beneficial compounds compared to carefully formulated liquid extracts.
Choosing a true mushroom extract ensures that your pet receives a more potent and bioavailable source of the natural wellness benefits mushrooms have to offer.
Is The Mushroom Product From Mycelium Or The Fruiting Body?
In the realm of mushroom supplements for pets, many brands choose to cultivate their fungi on grain or sawdust due to cost-effectiveness. However, this approach may not offer optimal benefits for your furry companions.
Using myceliated grain means missing out on the actual mushrooms, where the beneficial compounds like beta-glucans and terpenoids are most abundant. For maximum benefits, opt for products made from wild-harvested and properly cultivated mushrooms.
Jason Scott, the mycologist behind MycoDog's sustainable mushroom extracts for pets, joined me on the Your Natural Dog podcast to discuss the significance of extracting from the fruiting bodies of mushrooms and what features to seek in a pet mushroom supplement.

How Are MycoCat Mushrooms Being Grown?
How mushrooms are grown significantly influences the benefits mushroom supplements can offer your cat.
Did you know that mushrooms can be cultivated on substrates like grain, rice, and sawdust? While this method is commonly used for large-scale production, it can impact the nutritional value of the final product. Mushrooms absorb nutrients from their growing medium—so if they're grown on grains, they may not offer the same beneficial compounds found in mushrooms grown in nature.
When mushrooms grow on trees or logs in the wild, they have access to a richer array of vitamins and nutrients. This is especially important for pets, as these naturally occurring compounds can help support overall wellness.
Many people are surprised to learn that high-quality mushrooms are grown, harvested, extracted, and packaged in the United States. In fact, the Pacific Northwest is one of the best regions for cultivating wild-harvested mushrooms. Choosing mushrooms grown in this region helps ensure purity and potency while also supporting sustainable farming practices close to home—for both people and pets.
How Do I Give MycoCat Tinctures?
You can give MycoCat tinctures by adding them to your cat’s food or administering them directly into the side of the mouth. Both methods are effective—choose what works best for you and your pet.
For general use, we recommend starting with 1 dropper daily. For additional support, some pet parents gradually increase to 2–3 droppers per day based on their cat’s needs.
If your cat is small or sensitive, begin with a lower amount and slowly work up to the suggested use. Every cat is different, so it’s best to observe your pet and adjust as needed. When in doubt, consult with your veterinarian.
Should My Cat Take MycoCat With Or Without Food?
Since mushrooms for cats are “functional” foods, giving MycoCat mushroom extract tinctures with or without food is fine.
Can MycoCat Be Given With Other Supplements Or Medications?
While there are no known adverse interactions between mushrooms and other feline supplements or medications, every pet is unique. We recommend consulting with your holistic or integrative veterinarian before introducing any new supplement to your cat's routine.
Are Mushrooms Safe For Kittens And Senior Cats?
Yes, functional mushrooms are generally well-tolerated by cats of all ages. When introducing MycoCat tinctures to kittens or senior cats, it’s best to start with a lower amount and gradually increase to the suggested usage. Always observe your cat’s response and consult your veterinarian if you have concerns about age-related sensitivities.
