Why A Mushroom Extract Tincture And Not A Pill Or Powder?
Extraction is a vital process that unlocks the beneficial compounds within mushrooms, making them more readily available for use. Liquid mushroom extracts are highly effective at capturing and preserving the bioactive elements released during extraction, offering a concentrated source of natural wellness support.
Typically, the process begins with hot water extraction and alcohol extraction of the mushroom’s fruiting body. This dual method allows for a broad spectrum of beneficial compounds to be collected, including polysaccharides (such as beta-D-glucans), triterpenoids, ergosterol, antioxidants, and Vitamins B and D.
For products intended for pets, glycerin is used as the preservation medium instead of alcohol, offering a gentle and palatable option. Mushroom extracts may also be dried and sold as powders; however, it’s important to note that many powdered products on the market are simply ground-up mushrooms combined with growing medium, which often contain fewer concentrated beneficial compounds compared to carefully formulated liquid extracts.
Choosing a true mushroom extract ensures that your pet receives a more potent and bioavailable source of the natural wellness benefits mushrooms have to offer.
Are MycoCat Mushroom Extracts From Mycelium Or Fruiting Body?
In the realm of mushroom supplements for pets, many brands choose to cultivate their fungi on grain or sawdust due to cost-effectiveness. However, this approach may not yield the same beneficial compounds found in mushrooms grown on their natural substrates.
Using myceliated grain means missing out on the full fruiting body of the mushroom, where naturally occurring compounds like beta-glucans and terpenoids are most abundant. For cats, choosing a supplement made from wild-harvested or naturally cultivated mushrooms helps ensure a more complete profile of supportive nutrients.
Jason Scott, the mycologist behind MycoCat’s sustainable mushroom extracts for pets, joined us on the Your Natural Dog podcast to discuss the importance of sourcing and extracting from mushroom fruiting bodies—and what to look for in a mushroom supplement for pets.
“When you are looking at research of mycelium and the benefits of mycelium, it doesn’t really translate to myceliated grain the same way that people are kind of insinuating that it does. Whereas when you work with the full fruit body, you know what you’re getting—everything you’re getting is coming from the mushrooms themselves.”

Now, enter MycoCat—the rebel in the mushroom space. We do things differently. We source our mushrooms for pets straight from the wilds of the Pacific Northwest, never from grain-based bags or artificial substrates.
“We try to be as transparent as possible, and until we have a verified method to be producing mycelium in a pure way, we’re not going to offer it, because right now you just can’t get it unadulterated.”
– Jason Scott on Your Natural Dog Podcast
Choosing MycoCat means choosing mushroom extracts crafted from real mushrooms, for real pets—just the way nature intended.
Where Are MycoCat Mushrooms Grown?
Mushrooms are known bio-accumulators, meaning they naturally absorb elements from their surrounding environment—including any potential pollutants in the air or soil. That’s why sourcing is so important when selecting mushroom supplements for cats.
While some regions may rely on indoor or industrial cultivation methods, MycoCat tinctures are made with mushrooms that are wild-harvested or cultivated outdoors in their natural environment, without grains or fillers. We prioritize sourcing from the forests of the Pacific Northwest, where the air and soil remain relatively untouched by heavy industry.
By choosing mushrooms grown in clean, natural conditions, we help ensure the quality and integrity of every tincture we create for your feline companion.
How Are MycoCat Mushrooms Grown?
How mushrooms are grown can significantly influence the overall quality of mushroom supplements for cats. Did you know that some mushrooms are cultivated on substrates like grain, rice, or sawdust? While this method is cost-effective for large-scale production, it may affect the concentration of naturally occurring compounds.
That’s because mushrooms absorb nutrients from the material they grow on. When cultivated on grains, the resulting mushroom biomass may reflect the limited nutritional value of that substrate. In contrast, mushrooms grown on their natural substrates—such as logs or forest floors—tend to develop a broader spectrum of beneficial compounds.
Many people are surprised to learn that high-quality mushrooms are grown, harvested, and extracted right here in the U.S. The Pacific Northwest, in particular, is known for producing naturally cultivated mushroom varieties. Choosing U.S.-grown mushrooms means supporting small farmers, sustainable practices, and clean sourcing—something we’re proud to prioritize at MycoCat.
How to Use MycoCat Tinctures for Pets
You can give MycoCat mushroom tinctures by placing the liquid directly into your cat’s mouth (between the cheek and gums), or by mixing it into food.
When it comes to serving size, every cat is different. We generally suggest starting with 1 full dropper daily as part of your cat’s ongoing wellness routine. For more focused support, some pet guardians choose to give 2–3 droppers per day.
If your cat is very small or sensitive, it’s perfectly fine to begin with a smaller amount and gradually increase over time. Every little bit helps, so feel free to adjust based on your cat’s comfort and needs.
Should I Give MycoCat Mushroom Extracts With or Without Food?
Since mushrooms for cats are “functional” foods, giving MycoCat mushroom extract tinctures with or without food is fine.
Are MycoCat Mushroom Extracts Safe for Kittens & Senior Cats?
Mushrooms used in functional supplements are considered safe for most pets, including kittens and senior cats—when sourced and prepared properly.
As with any new addition to your cat’s wellness routine, we recommend starting with a small amount and consulting with your veterinarian, especially for young, elderly, or sensitive animals.
